Dangers of Pride

Living Awake in a World of Spiritual Warfare

In a world that often lulls us into complacency, we are called to a higher purpose - one that requires us to be alert, sober-minded, and watchful. This isn't a call to paranoia, but rather an invitation to live with intentionality and spiritual awareness.

The apostle Peter's words ring true across the centuries: "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8). This vivid imagery paints a picture of the spiritual reality we often forget - there is an unseen battle raging around us, and we are called to be active participants, not passive bystanders.

Consider for a moment what it would be like to camp in the African highlands, knowing lions prowled nearby. Would you lounge carelessly, or would every rustle in the grass capture your attention? This is the level of alertness Peter urges us to maintain in our spiritual lives.

But why such vigilance? Because we, like ancient Israel, have been set apart for a divine purpose. God has placed us in this world - surrounded by kingdoms and ideologies that often run counter to His ways - to be His representatives. We are called to be "a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation" (1 Peter 2:9), declaring the praises of the One who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.

This calling isn't always comfortable. In fact, it often runs directly against our desire for ease and comfort. The Bible repeatedly uses language of striving, pressing on, and fighting the good fight of faith. Paul exhorts us to "put on the full armor of God" (Ephesians 6:11), recognizing that our struggle isn't against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of evil.

So how do we live out this calling to spiritual alertness? Here are key principles to embrace:

1. Focus on the Prize: Keep your eyes fixed on the ultimate goal - not just getting to heaven, but knowing God intimately and bringing as many people with you as possible. This eternal perspective helps us navigate the temporary challenges and temptations of this world.

2. Be Sober-Minded: This goes beyond abstaining from alcohol. It means maintaining a clear, focused mind, free from the intoxicating influences of the world that would dull our spiritual senses. Stay sharp, stay alert.

3. Be Watchful: Pay attention to the world around you. Recognize the subtle ways the enemy might try to lead you astray - through force, pleasure, deception, or even misguided kindness. Be aware of the spiritual implications of the choices you face daily.

4. Live Humbly: Pride was at the root of Satan's fall, and it remains one of his most effective tools against us. Clothe yourself with humility, recognizing that any strength you have comes from God, not yourself.

5. Surround Yourself with Fellow Believers: We weren't meant to fight this battle alone. Find accountability partners, join a small group, serve alongside others in ministry. There's strength in community.

6. Create Reminders: In the Old Testament, people often built altars to commemorate significant spiritual moments. What modern-day "altars" can you create to remind yourself of God's faithfulness and your calling? It might be a scripture verse on your bathroom mirror, a meaningful photo on your desk, or a daily reminder on your phone to pray.

7. Stay in the Word: Jesus himself used scripture to combat temptation. Familiarize yourself with God's truth so deeply that it becomes your automatic response to the lies of the enemy.

It's crucial to remember that this call to spiritual alertness isn't about fear or paranoia. It's about living fully awake to the reality of God's kingdom and our role within it. We are foreigners and exiles in this world, but we're here on a mission.

The beautiful paradox is that even as we're called to vigilance, we're also invited to cast all our anxieties on God, "because he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7). Our watchfulness is grounded in the unshakeable reality of God's love and care for us.

For those who may be skeptical of this spiritual worldview, there's an invitation here too. Don't let pride or preconceived notions keep you from investigating the claims of faith. Many who set out to disprove Christianity - like Lee Strobel or Josh McDowell - found themselves compelled by the evidence and transformed by an encounter with the living God.

Whether you're a long-time believer or someone just beginning to explore faith, the challenge is the same: wake up to the spiritual reality around you. Don't sleepwalk through life, lulled into complacency by the world's siren song of comfort and ease.

Instead, live with purpose. Be alert to the ways God is moving in and around you. Recognize the tactics of the enemy, not to live in fear, but to stand firm in the power of God's might. Remember, you are part of a global family of believers, all facing similar struggles and all upheld by the same powerful, loving God.

As you navigate the complexities of life in this world, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, "the author and perfecter of our faith" (Hebrews 12:2). He has already won the ultimate victory, and He invites us to participate in the ongoing work of His kingdom.

So stay awake, stay alert, and live each day with the thrilling awareness that you are part of something far greater than yourself. In the words of C.S. Lewis, "There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal." Every interaction, every choice, every moment is infused with eternal significance when we live fully awake to God's presence and purposes.

May we all have the courage to resist the lure of spiritual slumber and instead embrace the vibrant, purposeful life God calls us to - wide awake and fully engaged in the grand story He is writing.
