You Belong to God: Standing Firm in a World Full of Lies
There is a war being waged for your identity. It is not fought with weapons or armies. It is fought with whispers, half-truths, and carefully crafted deceptions designed to make you question who you are and who you belong to. The enemy of your soul is clever. He does not always come at you with outright lies. He takes a sliver of truth, bends it just enough, and presents it in a way that sounds reasonable, even appealing. And if you are not rooted in what is true, you will drift.
This is not a new problem. It is as old as the garden.
The Devil's Native Language
Jesus himself addressed this head-on when speaking to a group of stubborn, spiritually hardened people who refused to hear him. In John 8:43-44, he told them plainly that their inability to receive his words revealed something about whose voice they had been listening to. He described the devil as one who was a murderer from the beginning, one who abandoned the truth and chose his own path. Jesus called lying the devil's native language. It is what he does. It is what he has always done.
That framing matters. When you hear a voice telling you that you do not measure up, that you do not belong, that God could not possibly want someone like you, recognize that voice for what it is. It is speaking its native language.
Paul echoed this warning in Ephesians when he urged believers to put on the full armor of God so they could stand against the devil's schemes. The word "schemes" is important. These are not random attacks. They are calculated strategies aimed at pulling you away from God, from truth, and from your identity as his child.
False Voices and the Real Gospel
One of the oldest tricks in the enemy's playbook is not the outright rejection of God, but the subtle distortion of his message. In the early church, false teachers were circulating letters and attaching the names of apostles to give their words credibility. They were wolves dressed as shepherds, teaching a gospel that was not a gospel at all.
Paul addressed this with striking intensity in Galatians 1, warning that even if an angel from heaven preached a different gospel, it should be rejected. The message of Jesus Christ is not something that can be improved upon, updated, or supplemented by human wisdom or spiritual-sounding philosophy. If what you are hearing does not align with Scripture, it is not the truth, regardless of how compelling it sounds.
This is why knowing your Bible matters. Not as an academic exercise, but as a lifeline.
You Have Been Anointed
Here is something that should change the way you see yourself: if you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ, you have been anointed by the Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament, anointing with oil set a person apart, marking them as God's chosen representative. What the Holy Spirit does in the life of a believer is infinitely greater. God himself takes up residence within you, writing his truth on your heart, just as he promised in Jeremiah 31:33.
Jesus told his disciples in John 14:16-18 that he would not leave them as orphans. He would send the Spirit of truth, an advocate who would live with them and in them. That same promise belongs to every person who believes. You are not navigating this world alone, trying to figure out truth from a distance. The Spirit of God is in you, teaching you, guiding you, and confirming what is real.
This is precisely why you do not need to chase after every new spiritual trend or charismatic voice promising hidden knowledge. You have access to the source. Spend time in Scripture. Pray. Remain in him. As you do, the Spirit will open your understanding in ways that no outside teacher can manufacture.
Children of God, Not Orphans
First John 3:1 captures something almost too wonderful to fully absorb. It describes the love of the Father as lavish, poured out on us so generously that we are called children of God. And then it adds four words that deserve to land with full weight: that is what we are.
Not what we are trying to become. Not what we might be if we clean ourselves up enough. What we are, right now, because of what Jesus has done.
This identity is not earned. It is received. Just as a child does not earn their place in a family by performing well enough, you do not earn your place in God's family by being good enough. You are adopted. You bear his name. You belong.
And because you belong, the way you live begins to change. Children reflect their Father. As you grow in your relationship with God, as you remain in him and allow his Spirit to work in you, your life starts to look more like Jesus. Not perfectly, not all at once, but progressively. Like a seed planted in soil, the life of God in you grows over time.

John 3:16-17 is perhaps the most quoted passage in all of Scripture, and yet its power never diminishes. God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, not to condemn the world, but to save it. Jesus came to destroy the devil's work. He took every sin, every failure, every moment of rebellion against God, and he carried it to the cross. In that moment, the serpent's power was broken.
The invitation is simple and it is open to everyone. Look to him. Believe in him. Remain in him.
If you have wandered, the door is not closed. The Father in the story of the prodigal son does not wait with crossed arms. He runs. He has always been running toward you.
You belong to God. Do not let anyone, or anything, convince you otherwise. Stand firm in that truth, walk in the light, and let the life of God in you grow into everything he created you to be.
